Over the past few years, the developments in Large Language Models (LLMs) have taken the field of artificial intelligence by storm, resulting in groundbreaking advancements in applications such as machine translation, text summarization, sentiment analysis, and many others. Among these, the potential of multilingual chat LLMs stands out in improving global communication by breaking down language barriers.
SambaNova, in collaboration with Together, has introduced BLOOMChat – a pioneering open-source multilingual chat LLM. Built on the BLOOM model, boasting 176 billion parameters and supporting 46 natural and 13 programming languages, this innovative model stands out as the first of its kind to offer over 100 billion parameters for languages like Spanish, French, and Arabic.
The creation of BLOOM was orchestrated by the international collaboration of the BigScience organization, which engaged over 1000 researchers in its development. Fine-tuning efforts focused on chat domain applications, combining OpenChatKit, Dolly 2.0, and OASST1 to enhance BLOOM’s capabilities for conversational AI.
BLOOMChat’s powerful infrastructure relies on SambaNova DataScale systems and Reconfigurable Dataflow Architecture. Synthetic conversation data and human-generated datasets – including OpenChatKit, Dolly 2.0, and OASST1 – were used in the iterative development process. The model’s accessible code and scripts can be found on SambaNova’s GitHub, enabling enthusiasts to contribute to or adapt the technology as needed.
BLOOMChat unveiled its impressive performance when subjected to human evaluations across six languages, where participants preferred BLOOMChat’s responses over those generated by GPT-4 (45.25%). Additionally, the model outperformed other open-source chat-aligned models in six languages (65.92%), showcasing its prowess in multilingual support. BLOOMChat also demonstrated superior performance in the WMT translation test compared to earlier BLOOM model iterations and other popular open-source conversational models.
Despite its prowess, BLOOMChat’s limitations include a propensity to produce inaccurate or irrelevant information and instances of unintentional language switching during conversations. As the model scales, modifications to safety mitigations may also be required. Continuous research and development will be instrumental in overcoming these obstacles and refining the application of BLOOMChat for global communication.
