AI vs Human Emissions: A Deep Dive into the Environmental Impact of Artificial Intelligence

As Seen On

The steady hum of technological evolution in the 21st century resonates with the steady introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into our day-to-day lives. Offering a plethora of applications, from self-driving cars and chatbots to ask-me-anything digital assistants, Artificial Intelligence is no longer something drawn strictly from the pages of a sci-fi novel.

But as the popularity and integration of AI technology burgeon, discussions surrounding its environmental impact emerge with equal intensity. Prominent among these debates is the comparison of the environmental footprint of AI vis-à-vis humans in the execution of similar tasks.

In the heart of these discussions lie AI behemoths like GPT-3, known for their advanced capabilities. Yet, these AI models come with their own set of environmental reservations. Large-scale models like GPT-3 necessitate high energy consumption, enough to draw comparisons with greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles.

In fact, recent research has dived headlong into the ecological cost of AI systems, evaluating heavy-hitters like ChatGPT, BLOOM, DALL-E2, and Midjourney. Primarily, the researchers aimed to compare AI and human emissions in tasks such as writing text and producing images—parameters that, on the surface, might seem inconsequential but bear the weight of significant environmental repercussions when magnified to a global scale.

The study yielded remarkable results. AI systems were found to produce minuscule amounts of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in comparison to their human counterparts when generating text—approximately 130 to 1500 times less. Similar results were observed in image production, where AI systems were reported to release between 310 and 2900 times less CO2e than humans.

While these startling numbers could theoretically set AI on a pedestal in terms of environmental preservation, the research team cautions that emission studies represent only a slice of the entire picture. This is because AI development and application opens a pandora box of other considerations.

Among these is the potential reality of professional displacement, with employment upheaval echoing strongly as AI systems continue to edge their way into the job market. Additionally, one can’t overlook the gravity of legal and moral principles in AI development and use, especially when it comes to AI-generated content. Lastly, the unforeseen effects, or rebound effects, resulting from AI systems’ introduction into diverse sectors also warrant careful consideration.

Though AI has shown extraordinary promise, it can’t replace the value and necessity of human talent, especially in areas requiring creativity, empathy, and critical decision-making.

In our journey towards technological advancement, finding a balance between harnessing AI’s benefits and managing its environmental implications is critical. This delicate equilibrium involves encouraging green technologies, yet not at expense of causing social upheaval or compromising ecological integrity.

Given this, let’s open up the floor for discussion. We encourage tech enthusiasts, environmental activists, AI researchers, and anyone interested in technology’s impact on our environment to share their thoughts. How can we balance technological progression with environmental preservation, ensuring the future is not only technologically advanced but also sustainable?

Up until working with Casey, we had only had poor to mediocre experiences outsourcing work to agencies. Casey & the team at CJ&CO are the exception to the rule.

Communication was beyond great, his understanding of our vision was phenomenal, and instead of needing babysitting like the other agencies we worked with, he was not only completely dependable but also gave us sound suggestions on how to get better results, at the risk of us not needing him for the initial job we requested (absolute gem).

This has truly been the first time we worked with someone outside of our business that quickly grasped our vision, and that I could completely forget about and would still deliver above expectations.

I honestly can’t wait to work in many more projects together!
