Fed up with leaky gut

Working with nutritionists, dietitians, and food and supplement consultants is one of my greatest joys! I spend more time trawling YouTube and Google scholar for the latest and greatest in nutritional information than I care to admit. There was a time when I hadn’t a clue what a nutritionist or dietitian actually did or why they’re so critically important. Until I became one of the millions of people around the world struggling with debilitating conditions that could be treated with smart lifestyle and dietary changes – but simply are not.

Rewind a few years back, and I was living a so-called normal life. Making music, surfing, and eating fast food like it was going out of style.

Things were great, except for the days when I couldn’t walk. I had an unexplainable swelling in my toes and feet that had me plodding along in pain. Years of podiatrists, tons of x-rays, and multiple ultrasounds couldn’t pinpoint the issue.

Things got so bad that I went to see an orthopaedic surgeon who in turn suggested that I better go see a rheumatologist.

One rheumy visit later, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition with no known cure. Psoriatic arthritis. Yay.

The next thing I knew, I was being recommended a low-grade chemo drug – for life. Here I was in my late 20s feeling pretty bad and being told I was super sick. This was news I just wasn’t prepared to stomach.

I knew literally nothing about nutrition at the time. But, I did know that I couldn’t accept being on such serious sounding medication without exploring all the options first.

Google became my best friend. As I hunted and searched for solutions, I came across the natural route to recovery. This was also the first time I met a real live nutritionist. “Can’t hurt to give it a shot,” I had thought in my desperation. What I didn’t realize was that it would be a life changing experience.

My nutritionist worked on my diet, gut health, and recommended supplements. She taught me all about leaky gut. My mind was blown when she explained that bloating and food babies after meals aren’t actually normal. I learned about where the inflammation I was experiencing comes from and how it happens.

I was learning so much that I suddenly realized then that you can be educated, well-read, fairly intelligent, and still know absolutely nothing about food. You know, that substance which we put into our bodies every single day in order to live? It boggles my mind now how eating to live well and medicating with nutritional lifestyle changes were all new to me. And I’ll admit that I was skeptical. How can swapping burgers with a bowl of greens and protein actually make a difference? Heck, there are definitely veggies and protein in burgers! Listen, I know this sounds cliché, but after 6 weeks on this new trajectory, I was walking barefoot and had never felt better.

I’ll spare you the picture of my toes before and after nutritional intervention, but the difference in color and size were astounding. Here I was, a few weeks earlier, ready to get different sized shoes for each foot and now I had two feet that looked and felt the same. No strapping. No non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), no more pain that I had lived with for so long.

Today, while there are still a few leftover skin issues to calm, being absolutely religious with clean eating, keeping my detox systems in check, and keeping abreast with the weird and wonderful world of nutritional supplementation has me feeling like a million bucks, ready to tackle everyday head-on.

As someone who used to scoff at dairy alternatives and gluten-free options, I never thought I’d be into organic “this” and organic “that”. But when the other option is pain, I’ll stick to my natural nutrition and diet experts thank you very much! While my wife calls me a snob, she’s hopped on the nutrition train with me and remotes in with her own Sydney-based nutritionist a couple of times a month, whose content she enjoys on Youtube. Our nutritionists taught us how to blast fatigue with food combos. How to shed stubborn pounds during a plateau. And even how to make our own Pringles!

Two years ago, I would have laughed at myself, but now I’m walking, running, jumping, breathing proof that nutritionists and dietitians are wonderful people that can change your life!

This is where design, copywriting, and photography and videography come into play. Using a careful blend of eye-catching imagery, seamless user experience (UX), and convincing copy will result in a sudden increase of interest in your services that you’d be surprised to know exists! Behind the scenes, I enjoy using data science to constantly improve, tweak, refine, and adjust all these elements to make sure we’re getting the best numbers possible in terms of lead generation (that’s just fancy talk for “getting interested people into your virtual door!)
   
3. Turning your window-shoppers and existing customers into long-term clients: With dietician and nutritionist consultation services, there is a huge opportunity here to maintain client relationships for months if not years. It is always easier to keep a customer than to find a new one. For this reason, apart from designing an organic social media strategy for your Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, and TikTok followers; I make it a point to include e-commerce management and long-term retention funnels into your marketing strategy. Whether it’s keeping your books and supplementary products competitive on Shopify through sales and dynamic pricing, or re-engaging with clients through a series of email marketing campaigns, I do it if it makes sense for your business and brings out the best of it!

When Casey approached me to write this review for him, I gladly accepted! The last couple of years have been a roller coaster and meeting Casey literally changed my life.

I graduated with a Masters in Human Nutrition from Sydney a few years ago. After completing the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program, joining the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), and gaining industry work experience, I had intended to return to Malaysia to start a private practice with two of my peers in this field.

As well, the impact of the pandemic on the economy meant that it would be more difficult in general to sell to a local population out of work for the greater part of a year while under lockdown.

Remote consultancy to consumers in parts of the world either less affected like Australia and New Zealand, or which eschewed the lockdown model such as the UK and USA, was in my mind, the way forward. I knew I had a lot to offer. I knew I could afford to be competitive while living in South East Asia. What I didn’t know was how to find clients and get them to trust me and take a chance.

While searching around for “digital marketing for dietitians” on Google, I came across CJ&CO. I remember feeling really good about this decision after my first consultation with Casey. He knew exactly what I wanted to achieve and immediately had a clear idea of how to do it. From his website, I knew he worked with a lot of allied health professions and was very familiar with telehealth and remote consultations. This meant that loads of people were once where I was! Wow! It took me a while, but over time I learnt how to keep those initial free consultations within the time limit allocated for them, explain to potential clients that they had a problem which I could fix, and do this all without talking too much while leading prospective clients towards a clear sign-up.

I’m usually operating at full capacity which has brought in enough funds to allow me to consider investing in the e-commerce side of things and look into building my own brand of delicious, convenient dietary supplements – a long-time dream I can’t believe might actually be happening now!
